On March 3rd, 2011, hundreds of youth across the state of Minnesota gathered at the state capitol to rally in support of issues that affect them. They met with legislators to discuss issues, including homelessness prevention, mentoring, out-of-school time, workforce development, youth intervention, and juvenile justice. The event—Rally for Youth Day at the Capitol—was hosted by the Youth Policy Alliance(YPA), which is a coalition of youth-serving organizations, associations, and alliances that work together to ensure sound policies for youth in the state of Minnesota.
At the rally, youth and many statewide organizations and leaders, including Minnesota Governor, Mark Dayton, spoke on many of the social and fiscal policy issues affecting young Minnesotans. They celebrated the successes of young people, who have benefited from local youth-serving programs and services. Throughout the event, youth also had the opportunity to express themselves creatively by decorating t-shirts and the YPA-event banner, creating personal issue-inspired bracelets, and making blankets for homeless youth.
