Are you constantly looking for new examples of vivid, engaging ways of telling others about the potential of asset building? So am I.
I learned long ago that one of the strongest tools for sharing the power of Developmental Assets with others is through storytelling. Early in my own introduction to the framework, I heard compelling stories that called to my heart, gut, spirit, mind or whatever assorted “parts of self” were tapped in the hearing of story. Along my personal journey with the work I’ve amassed quite a tool chest of stories; some are my own, others have been catalogued from interactions with thousands of asset builders across the globe. In all cases, I won’t tell a story unless I can confirm it to be true; and usually only after I’ve talked with the person who experienced it first-hand so I’m sure I tell their story accurately and completely.
There is nothing like a good story. Except, perhaps, TWO GOOD STORIES! Several years ago Flora Sanchez told me two interrelated stories that exemplify asset building. True stories. Stories that had happened to her fourteen years apart, but joined by two consistent characters in the stories: Flora herself and a young woman named Maria. The stories stuck with me. I shared them with others often, as an example of asset building in action. I kept thinking, “There has GOT to be a way to get these stories into the hands of more people, in ways that allow the story to be told with the power and passion I heard from Flora.”
Well, now there is a way. Visit the Search Institute Web site to view a trailer of Maria’s Story, as told by Flora Sanchez. It’s compelling. It communicates with audiences that everyday acts of asset building are not overwhelming; that they can be simple, yet yield profound results; that they matter. If you’re looking for another resource to add to your storytelling tool kit, this may be just the thing!
As for its impact, here’s what an early recipient of the DVD had to say: “…the emotional impact of Maria’s Story can be felt in minutes. One of my board members is a professional actress and playwright … She was blown away [by the power of the story.]”
