The Relationship Connection

Relationships are vital as we spread the asset message. In our training capacity, we have wonderful opportunities to model the importance of relationships in our approach with each of the participants and with the group.

Below are three ways that we can connect relationships:

• Identify Connectors
Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point describes Connectors as being “people with a special gift for bringing the world together.”

Workshops are prime opportunities to identify Connectors and find strategic connections among participants and other asset builders. Pay attention to and seize any connecting moments, beginning with introductions.

• Stories
A powerful way to connect folks is through stories. We learn about wonderful asset building ideas, examples and opportunities through both personal stories and those we have heard. What’s your favorite asset building story?

Maria’s Story is a powerful one from Flora Sanchez, Senior Trainer for Search Institute. Her intentional asset building actions transformed both her life and the young lady that she connected with. It is available as a DVD through the Search Institute store.

• Use Circles
One of my favorite things to do is participate in or lead circle time. Robert Fulghum presents an asset approach in his book All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. His points about sharing, playing fair, honesty, saying you’re sorry, flushing, napping and cleaning up your mess are often learned early in circle time.

Similarly, when participants connect in a circle, everyone has the same ability to see each person’s face. When appropriate, the circle can be a supportive setting where a sense of trust and comfort is developed and shared. Both impromptu and deliberate discussions happen among a circle group that may not occur as easily outside of that setting. A great example of the use of circles in an activity is the Web of Support, found in The Best of Building Assets Together (Jolene Roehlkepartain, 2008, p. 22). In addition, some asset champions have used Authenticity Circles where short, high focused meetings of peers are used to stay connected.
