Youth Serve: Asset-Building Strategies for Strengthening Service Learning

A Training Program for Youth and Adults Together

Service-learning—an approach that engages youth in service as an intentional learning strategy—has tremendous potential for building Developmental Assets. This practical workshop will help adult and youth leaders in schools, youth organizations, and congregations thoughtfully and creatively link service-learning and asset building in concrete ways that strengthen the complementary approaches.

By participating in this intergenerational workshop, participants will

  • develop a new understanding of how service-learning and asset building can reinforce each other to strengthen their work with youth;
  • learn and apply asset building to a simple process and framework for planning and implementing quality service-learning experiences;
  • gain practical ideas, strategies, and resources they can use in their own organization;
  • commit to concrete actions they will take to enhance their asset-building and service-learning assets.

Who Should Attend: Educators, youth workers, congregational leaders, youth, and community builders from all sectors who seek to strengthen their service-learning or asset-building efforts by linking the two approaches. The workshop is designed for multi-sector, intergenerational audiences. It can also be presented within a single sector, such as education.

Length: 4 hours

Recommended Materials for Each Participant: An Asset Builder’s Guide to Service-Learning, The Asset Approach booklet, and 150 Ways to Show Kids You Care mini-poster.
