Contributions to Search Institute: Curriculum and Training Design

Jerabek developed the Building Assets Reducing Risks (BARR) Program to address academic failure, truancy, discipline and chemical use in schools utilizing Search Institute’s Developmental Assets research. The Building Assets Reducing Risks Program is the first time the asset framework has been classified as science-based and the program is being closely watched locally and nationally for the results of our evaluation. The BARR program received one of six 2005 National Exemplary Prevention Program Awards and was listed in the National Registry of Effective Practices and Programs (NREPP) in 2009.

The program is demonstrating very promising results, including significant reductions in school failure rates (over 44% of 9th graders were failing one or more classes prior to program implementation-1999 and 18% of 9th graders were failing one or more classes at the end of 2005), significant reduction in chemical use according to the Minnesota Student Survey, reduction of risk behaviors and increase of thriving behaviors as indicated in the Search Institute’s Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behavior.
