Part 3: Agency Implementation & Fidelity to Approach: Technical Assistance and Train-the-Trainer Modules
As a continuation of the Motivational Strategies with Challenging Youth series, this segment encompasses three distinct parts:
- One half-day meeting with directors/managers, supervisors, and department administrators to discuss issues of implementation oversight, process, and procedures for this portion of the series (required for all participants in this segment of the series—can be conducted by conference call to reduce costs).
- Practice tapes with feedback. Staff trained in Motivational Interviewing (MI) through Parts 1 and 2 of this series can begin to submit digitally recorded audio tapes of session with youth and/or families (after securing permission). These recordings are sent electronically to a proficient “coder” who reviews the content and offers detailed feedback regarding the effectiveness of the use of MI techniques and tools. A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that lists the MI-adherent and non-MI-adherent responses is also returned. This process ensures implementation fidelity and provides valuable ongoing feedback to practitioners to who are learning to apply the methodologies of this series.
- Training of Trainers. The series ends with work to ensure in-house sustainability of the techniques and tools gained in this training series. Staff members who have completed the on-site taping session identified above and demonstrate proficiency with the methods can be trained to serve as resident trainers. This process reduces long-term costs for sustaining the effort and helps to build local capacity to build the work over time (this level of support and training is optional).
