Generations Together: Your Vision and Plan for an Asset-Rich Community is designed for communities that are launching an asset-building initiative, as well as those that have been engaged in community-based youth development for at least two years. Designed for youth and adult participation (five generations), the retreat provides a community with its own overview of achievements to date as well as the work ahead. You and your Search Institute facilitator will assure that the event is tailored to your community’s situation.
This retreat also serves as an opportunity for leadership development for people of all ages. It offers knowledge about youth development and community change, and enhances skills in leading community change on behalf of young people.
The purpose of your Generations Together retreat is to build an asset-rich community where all children and youth are valued and thrive.
Participants will
- celebrate youth as community assets;
- understand Developmental Assets—what they are, where they come from, why they are important, and what they look like in action;
- create a vision of an asset-rich community for youth;
- prepare and commit to action plans that intentionally build an asset-rich community.
Who Should Attend: Participants in the retreat should represent a cross-section of community leaders and residents, including a strong representation of young people (one-third to one-half). A five-generation span is most desirable (that is, the youngest participants are 13-14 years old, and the oldest are in their 80s). The major criterion for participants of any age is that they desire to contribute to the process of making their community a better place for children and young people to grow up. This event is not designed for individuals younger than 12.
Length: 8-1/2 hours (includes lunch and breaks).
Recommended Materials for Each Participant: The Asset Approach booklet. Also recommended are the 150 Ways to Show Kids You Care or 40 Ways Anyone Can Build Assets mini-posters and the Pass It On! book.
“I really felt involved, especially as a student. Being given equal ground was really valuable.”
