Change of Heart: Creating a More Caring School Climate is a retreat which encourages students and staff to individually contribute to a more caring school climate. The retreat is designed to help participants accomplish three goals that will in turn improve the health of young people:
- Promote a more supportive local community.
- Build strong, more caring relationships between and among everyone in the school.
- Intentionally build Developmental Assets.
Within these three goals are a number of short-term objectives that include the following:
- Participants will take steps to initiate or nurture positive relationships.
- Participants will intercede when someone is saying or doing something mean to another person.
- Participants will use their personal power to make a difference.
Change of Heart: Creating a More Caring School Climate has been purposefully designed to last one school day—from 8:30 am until 3:30 pm. Maximum and effective time still permits breaks, lunch, physical activity, and fun. Individual transformation is the focus of the event rather than group or school-wide transformation, as in the two-day event. This training is optimally facilitated as a “retreat” (i.e. away from school). A retreat is comprised of up to 48 students and 12 school adults.
Who Should Attend: The retreat is for students who are peer opinion leaders for the school and connect with many people. Participants can be selected through a formal survey, staff nominations, guidance or administrative appointments, or any other means the school feels is representative and appropriate.
Length: 7 hours (including 40-minute lunch and two breaks).
Maximum Group Size: 60 (48 students, 12 school adults).
Price: $1,925.00, plus per-participant materials (cost based on number of participants) and trainer travel expenses.
Recommended Materials for Each Participant: The Best of Building Assets Together, Get Things Going, Pass It On! at School, and Me@My Best.
Add the Training of Trainers (TOT) component to build your capacity to deliver this workshop to more students in your school (requires purchase of the training resource library).
Length: 1-1/2 days (the workshop day with students is followed by a half-day workshop for staff being trained as trainers).
Minimum Group Size: 6.
Price: $375/person (includes master training curriculum).
