A Peer Learning Opportunity Presented by Search Institute and Ready by 21

Search Institute and the Ready by 21 Partnership invite Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth Initiatives to apply for a nine-month peer learning opportunity. This project will help initiatives blend the Ready by 21 (Rb21) approach into their Developmental Assets community efforts and explore the advantages and challenges of bottom up and top down coalition structures in communities that are improving the outcomes for young people.

This nine month mini-grant will be awarded to five HC • HY communities. Each community will receive:

  • $5,000 from the Rb21 Partnership to cover training, resources, travel, and other expenses to participate in Take the Challenge Home activities.
  • A $1,000 Survey Services certificate from Search Institute.

Criteria for priority consideration:

  1. Active community coalition for a minimum of 5 years
  2. Committed to building an asset-rich community for young people
  3. Committed to participating in all Take the Challenge Home activities:
    1. Use Ready by 21 tools and resources developed by the Forum for Youth Investment and Search Institute to explore the dynamics of top down and bottom up change in community development
    2. Understand the basic principles of the Ready by 21 approach through participating in webinars and attending conference learning sessions
    3. Travel to and participation in a one-and-a-half-day Take the Challenge Home kick-off meeting on january 21 & 22, 2010, location TBD
    4. Six peer-learning-circle conference calls (two hours each) between February and August 2010
    5. Monthly documentation, January — September
  4. Priority will be given to communities from the southeastern United States, but all US communities are encourage to apply

Take the Challenge Home process

  1. Participate in Rb21 workshops (or webinars on workshops after the conference)
  2. Submit an online application at www.search-institute.org/takethechallengehome — deadline to submit application: December 1, 2009
  3. Applications reviewed by the Forum for Youth Investment and Search Institute
  4. Announce awards December 15, 2009
  5. Participate in kick-off meeting January 21-22, 2010
  6. Active participation in peer learning circles February-September
  7. Projects end September 30
  8. Participate in presentation at 2010 HC • HY conference in Houston Texas, November 17-19, 2010.
