What Kids Need: Sparks

Welcome to the new home of IgniteSparks! Here you’ll find a collection of articles, research studies, and resources to help you learn more about one of the newest and most exciting topics in positive youth development: sparks. You’ll also learn how to make a difference in the lives of kids by supporting them in the search for their spark and helping them develop their interests.

What Are Sparks?

Sparks are interests, talents, or dreams that truly inspire and motivate a person. They can be intellectual, spiritual, athletic, relational, or any other type of activity or interest that deeply moves a child (or an adult).

What Does Research Say about Sparks?

Several research studies have been done on sparks and their relationship to kids’ success. The results show that kids who have sparks and adults who support them are more likely to have a host of positive attributes and qualities. But, while this is encouraging, the studies have also shown that not nearly enough kids are getting the support they need.

How Can I Get Involved?

Supporting sparks is as easy as having a conversation with a child about what he or she really likes to do. But if you’re looking to take it to the next level and really become a spark supporter, we have the resources you need.
