General policies for using Search Institute materials

No Written Permission Required To

  • Reprint up to 500 words of text in a narrative format from one of our books, or from our Web site
  • Use a single table, figure, graph, or chart
  • Copy the Developmental Assets® list(s) for educational, noncommercial use only. In this case, the assets need to appear exactly as worded by Search Institute and appropriate copyright information must be included on all copies

Written Permission Required

A Search Institute® Permissions Request Form must be submitted for the following requests:

  • Use of more than 500 words of text
  • Any material, as well as the list(s) of Developmental Assets, that will be included in a publication/resource that will be sold
  • More than one chapter, table, figure, graph, or article from any single resource or off our Web site
  • Copies of entire reports or publications, including brochures, handouts, booklets, posters, etc.
  • Paraphrasing or adaptation of Search Institute material
  • Adaptation of the list(s) of Developmental Assets
  • Any material to be used for advertising/fundraising purposes
  • Use of the asset framework or list(s) of Developmental Assets in a publication that has a planned distribution of over 500 copies

Note: Including in the permissions request form a full description (or a copy) of how you propose to use the material(s) will help facilitate the permissions review process.

Fees for Use of Search Institute Material

Fees for using Search Institute material are based on a sliding scale, depending on the following factors:

  • Whether the material will be put into a product that will be sold
  • Amount of material used
  • The circulation and/or first print run of the publication in which our material is included
  • Search Institute will consider custom print requests to add an organization’s logo to our resources
  • Search Institute will consider negotiating licensing agreements for use or adaptation of complete products. These agreements are negotiated individually. Contact the permissions department for more information.

Permission Denied

  • To use Search Institute’s logo
  • Requests to reprint an entire publication currently for sale
  • Refusal to abide by the guidelines or to pay requested fee, if any
  • Any material for which Search Institute does not hold the copyright
  • Information for use in any publication that doesn’t represent the basic human values that Search Institute promotes
  • Information for use in a manner that misrepresents or distorts its original intent

Search Institute reserves the right to deny permission to reprint or reproduce material if it is determined to be in the best interest of the institute.

Out-of-Print Resources

Search Institute publications that are no longer in print may be photocopied in their entirety for a fee of 25% of the original retail price per copy. All information regarding copyright, authorship, and publisher must be included with the reproductions. To request one-time permission to duplicate out-of-print materials, please complete a Request to Duplicate Out-of-Print Search Institute Resources form.
