Search Institute's Reprint/Reproduction Permissions Guidelines
General Information
- For many requests, we ask that you submit a Permissions
Request Form. The request form gives us a record of your request
and provides you with written documentation of our response. Please review
these policies to determine if you need to complete a written request form.
- These permissions policies generally cover use of our products for educational, noncommercial purposes. Depending on the use of Search Institute's intellectual
property we may charge a flat permission fee or set up a licensing agreement.
See "Fees for
using Search Institute material" for more information about what factors
contribute to charging a fee or drafting a licensing agreement.
Licensing
- If a licensing agreement is necessary, we will determine a royalty fee,
require that appropriate credit be given, and require that Search Institute
review a draft of the product before it goes to final print.
Crediting
- Search Institute must always be given appropriate credit for information that is used. Even when paraphrasing, professional courtesy and ethics require accurate, non-malicious use and proper attribution of the material to Search Institute. Please use the following credit line for all reprints and reproductions of Search Institute material:
Reprinted with permission from [AUTHOR], [TITLE]. Copyright © ______ (insert year of printing) Search Institute®, Minneapolis, MN; www.search-institute.org. All Rights Reserved.
Fees
- Sometimes we may charge a permission fee. We ask that you help keep
our costs down by making your payment within the requested 30 days. Please
note that permission is not "officially" granted until Search Institute
has received payment. Payment can be made by check, purchase order, or
credit card. Payment is due within 30 days of the permission granted date.
Electronic copies
- Generally, we do not provide materials in electronic format. The list of 40 Developmental Assets (English and Spanish) can be found on our Web site in downloadable
format.
Response time
- Please allow 15 to 25 business days for a formal response, longer if more
information is needed or special arrangements are required.
- If your request requires an expedited response, a $25 special handling fee will be charged (in addition to any permissions fee resulting from the request). Check the box on the permissions request form indicating your acceptance of this fee.
Permission philosophy
- These policies are intended to protect copyrighted information while
allowing broad dissemination and appropriate use of Search Institute's research
findings and other intellectual property. We seek to follow standard copyright
practices that allow for use and innovation, while protecting the institute's
investment.
Specific Product Policies
The Framework of 40 Developmental Assets® (all age levels)
- No written permission required if you want to copy the list(s) for noncommercial,
educational purposes. In this case, the assets need to appear exactly as worded
by Search Institute. Be sure that appropriate copyright information is included
on any copies.
- Written permission is required if you plan to use the list(s) of assets
for commercial purposes (e.g. include the list(s) in a book or curriculum).
- Adaptation of the asset framework
We will allow others to modify, adapt, or translate the framework in instances
where it is necessary to address local issues or another set of needs (e.g.
a different population) if you:
- submit a permissions request form prior to publication along with a copy
of your adaptation;
- credit Search Institute for the original framework;
- clearly indicate that the modification is yours;
- not charge others for the basic framework or seek to protect it more
than Search Institute protects the original framework; and
- provide Search Institute with a copy of the published list.
NOTE: We encourage communities and organizations not to adapt the framework
unless it is absolutely necessary. An adapted framework will not reflect
the existing research and your community will find it more difficult to utilize
existing tools and resources in its asset-building efforts.

Abundant Assets Alliance
If you are interested in adapting or reproducing any of the materials that
the Alliance or Search Institute has created we ask you submit a permissions
request form. Requests to use materials found in the manual Asset Building
the YMCA Way will be handled the same as any other publication and will
follow these permissions policies.
The Alliance seeks to advance the efforts of local YMCAs and their constituents
(youth and adult) to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities
using the framework, philosophy and principles of Developmental Assets. With
this in mind, we want local YMCAs to use and share broadly the ideas, language,
