Play and Movement: Essential to Youth Programming

Batter’s Up with this Game for Warm Days

Play, a natural part of children’s development, is essential to their social, emotional, and physical growth. Exercise is also important. Exercise boosts brain power, according to Dr. John Medina, author of Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School. Dr. Medina’s research shows that including exercise in the classroom is a great way to renew creativity and energy.

Summer is coming fast, and Search Institute has many resources to incorporate play and movement into your program. “Water Balloon Batting Practice” is a perfect game for warm weather from Great Group Games for Kids, by Susan Ragsdale and Ann Saylor.

Water Balloon Batting Practice

Time: 10 to 20 minutes

Supplies: five or more water balloons per player, baseball bat, towels, a flat object to represent home plate

Prep: Fill up water balloons with water and tie them. Tell players beforehand to wear clothes that can get wet, even though they won’t get very wet with this game.

The Game: Choose an outdoor area for the game, and divide the group into teams of three to six people. Teams should line up a safe distance from the home plate while the current batter assumes position over the base. The pitcher will pitch water balloons over the home plate, and the batters, taking turns, attempt to make contact with the balloon.

Batters get two points for bursting a balloon, one point for making contact with the balloon during the swing, and zero points for missing the balloon. As with baseball, batters are out if they miss contact with the balloon three times in a row, and the teams rotate positions after three outs. There is no base running in this game. Teams should keep track of how many points they score. The team that accumulates the most points is the winner. Keep playing until all players have a chance to bat, or longer, if the group keeps enjoying the game.
