Get to Know Jim Conway, Search Institute's Senior Trainer

Jim Conway, Search Institute's Senior Trainer, recently paid a visit to our home office in Minneapolis, MN. We had a chance to ask him a few questions about how he got started as a professional trainer. He also talked about what makes him passionate about the training process as well as why he's committed to Search Institute's work.

SI: What makes you passionate about leading workshops?

JC: What makes me passionate about the training process is what happens when people begin to connect with an idea. As a trainer, we put people in the position to explore an idea and then own it in their own way. To see those lights go on -- when people suddenly see something make sense to them--that's really what keeps me going. I always say to people, "I want to do this training in a walker someday. I don't ever want to stop."

SI: Why are you committed to Search Institute's work?

JC: Search's research over the years has not only resonated with me in my previous work as a youth worker, but I also see it as having a direct application to the well-being of the kids in our communities. [As a workshop leader] I get to spend time learning from people who work with kids--and young people-- in schools and various community organizations. It feeds my passion and desire to continue doing this for as long as I can.

SI: Given Search Institute's new strategic direction and emerging research on Developmental Relationships, What are you excited about regarding the future of Search Institute?

JC: I see this as a continuation of the past 20 years of research. One of the things we've said for years is that Developmental Assets get built primarily through relationships. Yet, I don't know that we've ever taken the time, in depth, to look at what those relationships really look like, as well as looking at which types of relationships are most powerful in kids' lives. I'm really excited about delving into these things as a point of continuity from all of Search's previous work!

SI: What do you think makes Search's work unique?

JC: This isn't necessarily unique to Search, but it's unique in the world of youth work, and that is a fundamentally positive approach to work with kids. We've said it many times. We see them not as a problem to be fixed, but as a resource to be built. This is a unique notion that Search shares with others in the field of positive youth development. Search Institute's ideas and applications are unique in the sense that when presented, they apply to everyone: I can take the work of Search Institute and apply it if I'm a parent, a youth worker, a teacher. It really affirms the role of inclusiveness in the life of a kid. We really understand that kids are truly raised by a community, and we know that we must address all aspects of that community--everyone's role-- in raising [thriving] kids.
