Increasing Quality in Out-of-School Time Programs

A high quality out-of-school time (OST) program offers young people support, guidance, and opportunities to be their best selves. Whether a program’s goal is school success, health or fitness related, community involvement, or some other outcome, this interactive workshop will help participants understand what’s working in their programs and what improvements can be made.

During the workshop, participants will

  • Become familiar with research-based program quality standards
  • Review the Developmental Assets framework and its strength-based approach to working with youth
  • Reflect on the relationship between critical elements of program quality and Developmental Assets
  • Determine priorities for increasing the quality of their program and identify action steps for implementing these priorities
  • Reflect on the importance of using data to determine program improvement
  • Learn about Search Institute’s new survey for data collection and measurement

Who should attend

  • Directors, youth workers, and educators who work in out-of-school time programs

 

Taking Action with Your Out-of-School Time Data

This interactive workshop provides a facilitated process to help participants synthesize data collected from the Youth and Program Strengths (YAPS) survey. A Search Institute facilitator will work with participants to identify priorities and action steps to increase the quality of their program.

During the workshop, participants will

  • Review the Developmental Asset framework and the research-based program quality standards measured in the YAPS survey
  • Become familiar with the use of data in program assessment and planning
  • Consider ways to bring youth voice and perceptions into program planning
  • Based on their YAPS survey data, identify current program strengths and determine priorities and action steps for increasing program quality

Who should attend

  • Leadership and staff of programs who have collected program data using the YAPS survey

Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) are available.
