Each year, Webster, New York’s Parks and Recreation Department hosts summer camp for hundreds of children. During the K-3rd grade “fun camp”, we take about 85 campers to the local orchard to pick berries. They each get to pick a quart of berries to take home and another quart is donated to the local food pantry. We schedule the picking day on the same day as the food pantry has its distribution night, so they are fresh! We talk to the kids about assets, community service and healthy eating. WHEN pays for the cost of the berries, the school district provides the school buses and Webster Parks and Recreation provides the kids, camp counselors, and all other supplies needed.
