Q: What is the Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth Conference like?

A: The HC • HY Conference is an assembly-driven conference, so there is an assembly every day. The assemblies are to gather people as a community and inspire them in the youth development work that they do. There are also five opportunities to go to learning sessions, which are small groups led by an expert who has implemented the Developmental Assets in some unique and powerful way. The sessions will give the presenters a chance to describe their research or how they do what they do. All of these learning sessions are designed to strengthen the skills that attendees already have or deepen their understanding of the work of positive youth and community development.MORE

Charles F. Fernandez Center for Alternative Learning

With every student that enrolls at the Charles F. Fernandez Center for Alternative Learning, Principal Liz Fulton goes over the Developmental Assets, provides the students and parents with written information, and meets with all of the parents individually. The school’s goals are rooted in the Developmental Assets, as it tries to support students, meet social and emotional needs, and work with parents and the community.MORE

Bridging Town and Gown through Service-Learning Partnerships

At Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, Dr. Marie Watkins, Associate Professor and the director of the Center for Service Learning (CSL), teaches a service-learning based course called Community Youth Development. The course is a requirement for the 18 credit academic interdisciplinary Minor in Community Youth Development. Officers from Youth Voice One Vision (YVOV) and Youth As Resources (YAR) have a co-lecturing role in the course, connecting their lived experiences to the Developmental Assets to and the qualities of an effective youth worker. The YVOV and YAR officers also plan and participate in service-learning projects with the students in the class.MORE

GetNvolved

Thanks to GetNvolved, organizing available service and volunteer opportunities and hours is much easier and more fulfilling for students and staff in three Wisconsin high schools this year. GetNvolved is an online program that connects schools, students, and volunteer agencies to serve all of them better.MORE

Aquila Service Club for Young People

Students in first, second, and third grade at Aquila Primary Center in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, have the opportunity to be a part of their school’s Service Club, engaging in short- and long-term service-learning projects every other Tuesday after school.MORE
