PWCS students and staff were on hand to receive the Youth Human Rights Award from the Prince William County Human Rights Commission this past Saturday for the Healthy Communities, Healthy Youth (HCHY) program, a countywide initiative. Commission Chairman Curtis Porter and member Ateeb Ahmad presented the award during a program celebrating Universal Human Rights Day at the A.J. Ferlazzo Building Auditorium in Woodbridge. Each year the Human Rights Commission recognizes individuals and groups in the community for their unique contributions to human and civil rights.
The HCHY Student LEAD Team is composed of three students from each of the ten county high schools. These students are engaged in asset building activities in the community, the PWCS School Division, and at the schools.
Also in attendance were School Board member Michael I. Otaigbe, (Coles District), Superintendent Steven L. Walts, Deputy Superintendent Rae Darlington, and School Social Worker Jeri Sanders. Members of the HCHY Council, a group of adult representatives from Prince William County agencies, members of the private sector, parents, students, and educators, who attended include Debbie Bishop, professional development specialist; Doreen Dauer, supervisor of Student Assistance and Prevention Programs; Angie Mendez, Prince William County Community Services Board; Fred Milbert, supervisor of health, P.E. driver education, JROTC, and athletics; Sam Sanders, behavior specialist; Hansel Taylor, Ezra Nehemiah Solomon Youth Mentoring Partnership; Clarice Torian, director of Student Services; and Cynthia Zorn-Pettigrew, transition coordinator for OSMAP.
