Metro Youth Partnership

History of MYP (Formerly Moorhead Healthy Community Initiative)

The Moorhead Healthy Community Initiative (MHCI) was founded in 1995 by a group of Moorhead citizens concerned about the well-being of its children and youth. This group formed the organization with a unique philosophy on youth development: Search Institute’s Healthy Community • Healthy Youth based upon the 40 Developmental Assets® model.

In November 2006, MHCI was part of a panel presentation on community-based solutions at the third annual George Sinner Symposium on Public Policy. Out of that presentation, a steering committee composed of leaders from Moorhead, Fargo, and West Fargo was formed to examine the possibility of a metro-wide healthy community movement.

In May 2007, Search Institute’s student profile survey was administered to 17,000 students in 4 through 12 in all public and private schools in the metro area. The results of the survey were released to the public in a community wide event, “Join the Wave for Metro Youth,” held September 25, 2007. A new organization, Metro Youth Partnership (MYP), was formed with a new expanded board representing the larger community being elected in January of 2008. We move forward, now, committed to creating the best place on the planet to be a kid.
