Slippers for Seniors

A sixth-grader was inspired to take action and help others when she saw news reports of fires in Southern California.

After doing some research on the Internet, she discovered that a large number of senior citizens in a mobile home park had lost their homes and decided to start a “Slippers for Seniors” drive. She contacted her Girl Scout troop as well as her sister’s troop and began collecting slippers to deliver when her family traveled to L.A. during Thanksgiving break. She decided that slippers would be what her Poppa would miss, especially now that the weather was getting colder.

The “Slippers for Seniors” were successfully delivered to the Salvation Army in L.A., which deals directly with the fire victims. Donations came from both Girl Scout troops as well as from friends and families from Foothill High School. When asked how the young women felt after they made the donation, they replied, “proud that we made a difference,” and “good and generous.”
