Asset-Building Ideas from Care Team Schools

Each Care Team Collaborative school has a Care Team Coach who provides ongoing support as the school and its partners learn to more effectively meet the needs of all children by implementing the Care Team framework. This includes helping schools partner with youth to transform their schools into asset-building schools so that every youth experiences a safe and supportive learning environment. While individual schools are at different levels in their asset-building initiatives, each is committed to engaging both youth and the community around asset building. Below are just a few examples of some of the great asset building being done in our Care Team schools:

  • The 40 Developmental Assets are listed in the front of every student’s agenda book so teachers and students can easily refer to them during lessons and other activities.
  • We are partnering with faith-based organizations to hold asset-based extended day programs that combine homework help, counseling, strong positive adult role models, and fun.
  • Birthday Club: Every morning a group of middle school students wanders throughout homerooms and sings Happy Birthday to everyone celebrating a birthday that day.
  • Interest-Based Homerooms: Students complete an interest survey and staff pick students for their homerooms based on similar interests, regardless of grade level (9–12). Members of the homeroom stay together for all four years.
  • Asset Clubs: Once a week for 30 minutes, school faculty and community volunteers host clubs to help youth experience new hobbies and interests. Examples of clubs include knitting, juggling, computers, Tae Kwon Do, cooking, and reading. Throughout the school year, youth participate in three different clubs.
  • Faculty Asset Retreats: Adults spent a weekend away learning more about Developmental Assets and how they can more effectively engage youth and other staff in their school to build assets and create a healthier, more supportive school climate for all.
  • Summer Asset Program: This community-wide program is for middle school youth at risk of court involvement. Youth learn about assets, participate in service projects, and meet new adults who can and will be future supports for them.

Care Team Collaborative and its partners have been recognized for outstanding work in the areas of asset building, community collaboration, and mental health in schools. The following is a list of awards and recognitions received within the last year:
