BASIC builds positive relationships between youth and adults using Asset Builder Recognition Cards. Key community members are asked to help identify citizens who are already at work building assets with young people, such as coaches, youth pastors, scout leaders, Sunday school teachers, and business leaders. After citizens are identified, BASIC asks for their pictures and makes up trading cards. At block parties, about a dozen of these Asset Builders are in attendance, and there are contests for students to collect the whole set of cards. The students are shown a photo of the Asset Builders ahead of time, and to get a card the students must find the Asset Builder in the crowd and then engage that person in a brief conversation. There are prizes for the kids who collect at least a few cards.
