Williamson, Franklin, and Jackson Counties
Since 2004, local prevention providers and community partners have been working to build stronger, more asset-rich communities for young people. The coalition now known as BASIC began collaborating in 2007 by bringing together four of the largest organizations in the area that were dedicated to the Developmental Assets model. This work has grown to involve local businesses, schools, churches, libraries, and civic groups in launching ambitious initiatives to grow and sustain deeper relationships between adults and young people.
BASIC initiatives are happening in the towns of Marion, Carterville, Carbondale, Herrin, Zeigler, Benton, Johnston City, and West Frankfort, Illinois.

Asset Builder Recognition Cards
BASIC builds positive relationships between youth and adults using Asset Builder Recognition Cards. Key community members are asked to help identify citizens who are already at work building assets with young people, such as coaches, youth pastors, scout leaders, Sunday school teachers, and business leaders.MORE
Peggy and the Circle Kids
In our coalition work throughout the area we met an awesome lady who is the head librarian in the town of Zeigler. This small town has its nice modern library located on the “Circle” downtown. Every day the head librarian Peggy Carpenter looked out the library window and saw the bus dropping off kids after school. But the kids didn’t walk home. Instead they just hung out on the square, unsupervised. They would spend hours doing nothing, except occasionally getting in trouble.
Find out how Peggy the Librarian engaged these young people.
