Training of Trainers Success Story: Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD

Debbie Gardner
Lead Elementary Counselor

Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD is proud to be a supporter and promoter of the 40 Developmental Assets as seen on the video produced by our District Webmaster, Carolyn Marcantel (click here to watch the video). The District and Board of Trustees have supported this philosophy for more than 15 years. In 2006 and again in 2008 Gary Russell, Coordinator of Counseling, and Debbie Gardner, Lead Elementary Counselor, had the opportunity to attend Training of Trainer (TOT) events at Search Institute. After the training, Gary and Debbie began sharing their enthusiasm about the assets with the district employees.

Gary Russell
Coordinator of Counseling

The District goal is to have every employee receive a minimum of 3 hours of assets training. Over the last 3 years, training has occurred at all elementary schools as well as moved into junior high. Each fall, Debbie and Gary do two-hour trainings for new District employees. But it doesn’t stop there. Debbie has continued to provide information about the 40 Developmental Assets to elementary counselors. The counselors have become the champions at their schools by sharing activities and information during monthly faculty meetings. A district newsletter also provides information to all administrators and counselors in order that they may share this information with faculty and parents. Keeping the message out there is vital. Gary helped secondary schools provide Rachel’s Challenge to students and parents. More information can be found on the District’s Asset Building page.

One goal for next year is to continue to reach out to other departments within the District. Russell and Gardner will train the Nutrition Department to help cafeteria workers know more about and use the assets. Then they will move on to maintenance and bus drivers as well as coordinators and teachers at all levels. It is also important to reach out to parents and community by providing information and training. Assets support and reinforce the goals of the District. As you can see, the 40 Developmental Assets are alive and well and the District will continue to encourage, support and use these concepts.
