Focusing on Youth by Using Data: nFocus Software

How do you prove that youth programs in your community are working? How do you gather data that will attract funders? How do you measure the impact your asset-building efforts are making on the community? These are the questions that nFocus Software strives to help communities answer with their TraxSolutions system.

According to their Web site, “The TraxSolutions Community tracking and outcome measurement solution provides an efficient and effective means of data management, including student attendance and progress tracking.” With this data, communities are able to measure impact, reduce costs, and secure funding for their youth programs.

Company president Ananda Roberts started nFocus when she was a college student in El Paso, Texas. What started as a company focused on grant writing and event production, developed into a technology firm for the public sector with the goals of tracking and measuring impact and being able to determine what works.

According to Roberts, “we work in out-of-school-time programs and link student information to out-of-school time program data through the use of electronic ID cards, so programs and services can start to understand how to deliver direct services to children to make the impact.”

TraxSolutions can be extremely beneficial to communities because it allows them to solve problems using facts instead of speculation. “There are silos of data in every community and what we do is integrate and aggregate multiple data sets throughout the community,” explained Roberts. “So communities can make better decisions that are driven by data.”

Roberts gives the example that a community facing a juvenile crime problem could analyze where exactly the problem is taking place. Then, with that information they could determine what services they have in that area to address the issue.

As a technical partner with Ready by 21, Roberts is looking forward to the future and nFocus’ overlapping goals with the Ready by 21 challenge. “The Ready by 21 model is similar to what we’re doing. The goal is to deploy cities with their model in a collaborative manner and be able to put their initiative in place in cities around the country.”
