What is Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth?
The HC • HY initiative is a national effort to bring Search Institute’s paradigm for positive youth development to communities across the country. The initiative, rooted in the institute’s framework of Developmental Assets, provides communities, schools, organizations, and families with resources, technical assistance, and training to launch and sustain long-term efforts to promote the positive development of youth.
What are the goals of the HC • HY initiative?
Ultimately, HC • HY envisions citizens and institutions joining together to create healthy communities for people of all ages, in which young people will thrive. As the initiative unfolds in communities across the country, Search Institute is deepening its understanding of child and youth development and the dynamics of change in diverse settings, and hopes to apply the principles learned in a way that supports its vision.
How does the Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth initiative relate to other work being done at Search Institute?
The HC • HY initiative takes the lessons learned from studies done in Search Institute’s four core research areas (Developmental Assets, sparks and thriving, spiritual development, and community engagement) and applies them in communities around the world. In addition, many of the groups that Search works closely with—including educators, youth-serving professionals, faith community leaders, and parents—are involved in the planning and implementation phases of these community initiatives and see their own work as part of building healthy communities for young people.
