Spirituality serves as a moral compass

Parents when asked to describe the impacts that spirituality has on the lives of their children responded that their child’s spirituality serves as a moral compass. They thought that their child’s faith guides them to make the “right” decisions. Parents believe that by being spiritual their children have a clear understanding of what is right versus what is wrong. Those children who are spiritual were described by parents as being those who stayed on the right path, were respectful of others, and made choices that were protective of their health, safety, and well-being.

They expressed their sentiments in this way:

“It is so difficult to explain, it is like a conviction, blind faith. For them (the youth), it is like (being) logical.”
(England)

“All I know that [is children with a sense of spirituality] show their manners.”
(Nigeria)

“I understand spirit is a kind of spiritual power which means it inspires the child to do the right thing. This is what I understand.” (China)

Overall, parents reported that spirituality was a guiding force that protects their children from making choices that would negatively impact their health and safety.
