Current Federal Funding Opportunities

The purpose of this section is to help communities and organizations find federal dollars to enhance and expand their work of promoting positive youth development. We offer an overview of federal grant announcements that we have selected from our daily scanning process because the grant funds could potentially be used to support activities that are grounded in the developmental asset framework; and/or to support communities and organizations who wish to use Search Institute resources, such as trainings, consultation, and products, that promote a developmental assets approach.

Who might be interested in these grant opportunities? We think grant writers, Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth (HC • HY) community initiative leaders, leaders of community-based and faith-based organizations, and others working with community initiatives and organizations that are promoting developmental assets  will find these federal grant opportunities of interest.

This section will be updated weekly, so please check back often.

Tools and Resources for Community Initiatives

Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth initiatives work to mobilize and equip individuals, organizations, programs and sectors throughout their communities to build assets in all young people. On this page you will find downloadable resources that can assist you as you go about your work. Some have been developed in the course of Search Insitute's grant-funded work. Others may come from initiatives like yours.

Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth® Logo Download

Search Institute seeks to build widespread national awareness of the framework of Developmental AssetsTM and the call to creating healthy communities for youth. In response to requests, Search Institute will allow communities to use the registered trademark logo for the Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth initiative for their own initiative's logo, provided conditions of the Agreement for Using the Search Institute Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth Logo and Name are met.

A Grant Template for Collaboration between Initiatives

Between 2000 and 2003 Search Institute worked on a project with four community initiatives in Minnesota to explore what small doses of consulting and training from Search Institute could contribute to the sustainability of these four initiatives. One outcome from that project is a grant template (RTF Format) which would allow other initiatives to apply for local funding for a similar project. The grant template includes language describing Search Institute and the Developmental Assets, and also includes a description and a timeline for the three year project, and lists the various components. This entire project and the grant template that resulted from it were made possible by the generous support of the Otto Bremer Foundation.

"Alaskan Homilies to Help Kids Succeed"

Youth development includes all parts of a child's growth - emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Within faith communities, there are many opportunities to develop positive assets that youth will need as adults, including values, leadership skills and service to community. These assets can be emphasized in every class, activity, relationship and worship service.

The bookAlaska Homilies to Help Kids Succeed was born in a faith community in Anchorage, where it was put to use for over 50 weeks as part of regular services. The publication was written for use by faith communities of all kinds. The format was selected to enable each Developmental Asset to be described in a homily, or brief sermon. For each asset, this publication contains a page of ideas that individuals and groups can use to help foster Developmental Assets. The suggestions are just that - ideas on which to build. Feel free to adapt the material in this publication to your individual faith community.

This book is available for download free of charge at the Alaska Ice web site.
