Motivated to Help Young People?

Some of Search Institute's most exciting work this year has been on increasing motivation in young people. Dr. Kent Pekel, our president and CEO, is beginning to write a new book, The Perseverance Process: A Practical Guide to Help Young People Stick to It, and we are inviting you to be part of this work.

Don't worry! No one will ask you to research or type or proofread. All you need to do is participate in our new crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to offset the expenses of writing the book. The process of developing a book is lengthy and will involve months of work by Dr. Kent Pekel, as well as many staff members at Search Institute. Besides this new book, Search Institute is actively involved in developing a research-based Perseverance Process to increase young people's motivation and persistence. Last year, Dr. Pekel held a series of free webinars on perseverance. This summer and fall he conducted numerous workshops on perseverance, gathering input from educational experts from around the United States. In addition, Search Institute will be introducing a student assessment tool on perseverance in early 2015 to help schools work with students in achieving academic success.

Link to Search outcomes correlations re: DAP

Peter I've been the Assets lead presenter and staff lead with a major private/public partnership that for 65+ years has led perseverance. After co-training with a parent/community engagement manager I became a DAP facilitator and administrator in a large area private/public partnership serving our schools. What are the most relevant newer studies to cite; Boosting Student Achievement was a great study but skewed less towards free/reduced lunch families. My goal is to continue DAP and Community Asset Mapping in schools first in a FNE section of district and build this out with after school programs etc. We still are without a significant pilot, as we don't have relevant insight from the Dallas and Omaha districts' year study on DAP applications as an example. Peter please advise relative to appropriate outcomes studies for reference?

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, there is no published study linking assets and achievement that is more recent than our 2006 Journal of Adolescence study.
