The Postcard Project: Goals for a New School Year

Ah! That new school year smell!

To those of you finishing your first week or two back at school – congrats! To those of you about to start back up – congrats! It’s time to reflect on the new year ahead.

I’m a bit of a baseball nut. I love the Minnesota Twins something fierce. One of my favorite things about baseball is Opening Day. Regardless of what reason and logic might say, every Opening Day comes with that hope that this year is the year. Pitching will be spot on, hitting will be consistent, and the Twins will claw their way to a World Championship. Every year I believe this. It’s one of the wonders of baseball.

A school year can have that same energy. We come off summer full of hopes and dreams for the year ahead. We’ve set goals for ourselves and our students. We’ve thought about how this year will be different or better. Like Opening Day, anything is possible.

This year I’d like you to do a quick project. It’s a simple one. All you need is two notecards or pieces of paper.

Here’s the project:
1. Write a personal goal down on one of the pieces of paper.
2. Put it in the top drawer of your desk.
3. Write the same goal down on the other sheet.
4. Give that copy to a colleague.
5. Ask your colleague to check in on your goal and hold you to it.
6. Read your goal everyday before the bell rings.
7. Have your best year yet.

What are your goals? What are your dreams? Who are you going to tell?
