Spoiled by Progress

Last week, I had the privilege of speaking to a group of students at a local college who were finishing their last credits before becoming licensed teachers. What a joy to welcome 25 people to the profession and give them some ideas to start them thinking about their own health and boundaries before they even start their careers.

I also had a strange experience as I was speaking. The room was equipped with a smartboard, an amazing device that has taken root since I was last in the classroom (which was only 3 years ago.) It was somewhat intoxicating to have this cool thing behind me, allowing me to share ideas in a technologically fluid manner that was much cooler (gasp!) than a whiteboard!

At one point I had trouble moving between slides. The board sort of hiccuped. I was stumped. And for a brief moment I had a reaction along the lines of “Come on, you stupid computerized chalkboard-that’s-allowing-me-to-do-all-this-Jetsons-like stuff! Work better!”

In that vein, I want to share this fantastic video clip that might go a long ways toward explaining our students’ reactions to modern technology as well as our own. Enjoy it. It’s wonderful.
