I was in Austin, TX earlier this week to meet with our good friends from the Texas Association of Partners in Education. Search and TAPE have been good friends for many years as TAPE seeks to connect businesses, schools, government, and communities together around building assets for Texas youth. And they’re really good at it.
Part of our involvement includes sponsoring a “Cooking Up Partnerships” dinner where local youth who are students in the American Youth Works schools cook and serve an amazing gourmet meal for the attendees. I’m not talking about mac-n-cheese dinner here. I’m talking about a four course, 5-star meal.
At the dinner I had a chance to speak to the diners about Search’s Developmental Assets. Rather than go through the framework as some sort of theoretical platform, I simply highlighted that the entire evening itself WAS the assets. Youth celebrated as talented and gifted people. Adults connecting in conversation about and with young people. Youth working together for a common goal. Communities coming together to thoughtfully embrace opportunities for young people.
Add it all together, and this evening was exactly what is right and good about the world and its youth. The privilege was entirely ours.
