Summer Learning at the Library

During the hot summer months in Prescott, Wisconsin, something very cool is going on at the public library. For eight weeks in June and July, the Prescott Public Library opens its doors to children and youth of all ages to participate in various activities that keep kids entertained and learning during their break from school.
The library is planning a range of events this year around the theme “Make a Splash: Read,” including a pirate day, shark trivia, science experiments with water, and a story time that will teach kids about keeping Wisconsin’s lakes and rivers healthy.

Community Reading Programs and Assets
What does a hammock, a glass of ice cold lemonade, and a stack of new books remind you of? Summer! Nothing feels quite as indulgent, invigorating, and refreshing as reading books for fun. What a wonderful time to think about Asset 25, Reading for Pleasure. Reading for pleasure is incredibly powerful in that it is applicable to everyone and helps build a sense of community for all.

Search Institute at the Library
After a successful inaugural exhibit at the 2009 American Library Association Annual Conference (ALA) in Chicago, Search Institute will be exhibiting at the 2010 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, DC, June 24-29.
Peter Benson will appear in a prerecorded presentation as a panel member for the President’s Program of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Division of ALA. This year’s program, titled Risky Business, goes virtual with audio and video content that explores ways in which librarians serving teens can take risks in order to strengthen teen services. Program content is available 24/7 after the conference on a special President’s Program blog and includes interviews with librarians who have taken risks in their careers in order to advocate for and serve teens. A link will also appear on the Search Institute Web site in July.
Information about the connection between Developmental Assets and the work of librarians has been published in library science textbooks and featured in magazines like Voices of Youth Advocates (VOYA) and Library Journal for years. For the past three years, Search Institute Press, the publishing division of Search Institute, has been reaching out to members of YALSA, including mailing our catalog to 3,000 YA librarians.
Last year, Search Institute Press included an advertisement in the ALA Buyers Guide featuring Playful Reading. The banner ad took librarians to a Web page where we offered 50 complimentary review copies to the first 50 librarians who submitted information. The books were gone within a week, snatched up by child- and youth-serving librarians and library directors around the nation who intended to use them to guide their summer reading programs. We are looking forward to meeting them at the conference.
