Planning a National Night Out Event

Do you know your neighbors? If you live in West Allis, chances are you’ve met them at a National Night Out event. For over 20 years, the 60,000 residents of the small Wisconsin city have had the opportunity to participate in this annual crime prevention event.
National Night Out is an event that brings community members together to interact with and find out about the services provided by the police, fire, public works, and health departments. This crime prevention event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and is celebrating its 27th year of existence this August.

Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood?
Summer is the perfect time to take asset building to the streets of your community. Children are out of school and families are already outside enjoying the nice weather, so get your initiative or organization to host an event that brings neighbors together to meet one another, have fun, and learn about the assets. Don’t have time or resources to plan an event? Get involved at a local fair, parade, or festival to reach out to your community or just start serving lemonade and cookies to the kids on your block. Build assets and enjoy all that summer has to offer at the same time!

Who Was There for You?

Shelby Andress, Search Institute Adjunct Senior Consultant and Facilitator
I often ask workshop participants to talk about “an adult who helped you, when you were a teenager, to become the person you are today.” Lately, however, I’ve been inspired to ask a different question: “When was a child or a teenager there for you, just when you needed them?”
Connecting with Kids of All Ages
What do kids need to succeed? Search Institute’s framework of Developmental Assets ® originally began as a study of adolescents, but now we have lists for K-12. Our newest list, for grades K-3, is now available in Spanish. “View and print all of the lists on our site.”: http://www.search-institute.org/developmental-assets/lists
